CENTRAL FLORIDA’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE
AT 3.8 PERCENT FOR JANUARY 2018

 

Orlando, FL – The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Central Florida region (Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Sumter counties) was 3.8 percent in January 2018. This rate was 0.7 percentage point lower than the region’s year ago rate of 4.5 percent. The region’s January 2018 unemployment rate was 0.3 percentage point lower than the state rate of 4.1 percent. The labor force was 1,347,622, up 44,742 (+3.4) over the year. There were 50,895 unemployed residents in the region.

The unemployment rates for the five counties that comprise the Central Florida region were: Lake County (4.0 percent), Orange County (3.6 percent), Osceola County (4.2 percent), Seminole County (3.6 percent), and Sumter County (5.9 percent).

In January 2018 nonagricultural employment in the Orlando‐Kissimmee‐Sanford MSA was 1,268,700, an increase of 41,300 jobs (+3.4 percent) over the year.

The Orlando‐Kissimmee‐Sanford MSA had the highest annual job growth compared to all the metro areas in the state in leisure & hospitality (+11,500 jobs); professional & business services (+8,900 jobs); mining, logging, & construction (+6,300 jobs); and manufacturing (+3,800 jobs) in January 2018.

The Orlando‐Kissimmee‐Sanford MSA had the fastest annual job growth rate compared to all the metro areas in the state in manufacturing (+8.8 percent) in January 2018.

The Orlando‐Kissimmee‐Sanford MSA had the second fastest annual job growth rate compared to all the metro areas in the state in mining, logging, and construction (+8.9 percent) in January 2018.

The Orlando‐Kissimmee‐Sanford MSA had the second highest annual job growth compared to all the metro areas in the state in financial activities (+4,400 jobs) in January 2018.

The Orlando‐Kissimmee‐Sanford MSA was tied for the second highest annual job growth compared to all the metro areas in the state in trade, transportation, and utilities (+2,200 jobs) and information (+100 jobs) in January 2018.

The Orlando‐Kissimmee‐Sanford MSA had the third fastest annual job growth rate compared to all the metro areas in the state in information (+0.4 percent) in January 2018.

The Orlando‐Kissimmee‐Sanford MSA had the third highest annual job growth compared to all the metro areas in the state in education and health services (+2,800 jobs) in January 2018.

The mining, logging, and construction (+8.9 percent); manufacturing (+8.8 percent); financial activities (+6.0 percent); leisure and hospitality (+4.6 percent); professional and business services (+4.1 percent); education and health services (+1.9 percent); other services (+1.4 percent); trade, transportation, and utilities (+0.9 percent); and information (+0.4 percent) industries grew as fast or faster in the metro area than statewide over the year.

The industries gaining in jobs over the year were: leisure and hospitality (+11,500 jobs); professional and business services (+8,900 jobs); mining, logging, and construction (+6,300 jobs); financial activities (+4,400 jobs); manufacturing (+3,800 jobs); education and health services (+2,800 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+2,200 jobs); government (+700 jobs); other services (+600 jobs); and information (+100 jobs).
