Youth Homelessness & SunRail Expansion Heads South

This week:

Youth Homelessness

This past Tuesday, the Central Florida Commission on Homelessness (CFCH) released the Youth Homelessness Count report.  CareerSource Central Florida is a committed partner to addressing this emerging issue.  The point-in-time count, led by Chapin Hall from the University of Chicago, identified that, in one night, there are at least 258 unaccompanied youth in the tri-county area.  These youth are disconnected from family, work, education, and the mainstream.  The CFCH is highlighting this issue in an effort to create a coordinated and working local system – one that ensures such episodes of homelessness are few, rare, and of short duration in our community.

Looking ahead:

SunRail Expansion Heads South

SunRail’s expansion south to Osceola County is set to begin operation later this spring.  Four additional stations between SandLake Road and Poinciana will open the system to thousands of potential riders every day. Coupled with the expansive bus network, the expanded system could alleviate a fair amount of the I-4 and Orange Avenue traffic running in both directions to downtown Orlando and points farther north.  As the system continues to operate, businesses (like ours) should encourage ridership through added incentive programs.  Championing commuter rail can ultimately reduce government subsidies, free up roads, and stimulate economic development for all of Central Florida.
