CENTRAL FLORIDA’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE AT 2.8 PERCENT FOR NOVEMBER 2018

Orlando, Fla. – The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Central Florida region (Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Sumter counties) was 2.8 percent in November 2018. This rate was 0.7 percentage point lower than the region’s year ago rate of 3.5 percent. The region’s November 2018 unemployment rate was 0.2 percentage point lower than the state rate of 3.0 percent. The labor force was 1,390,139, up 50,048 (+3.7) over the year. There were 38,338 unemployed residents in the region.

  • Orange and Seminole counties had the lowest unemployment rate (2.6 percent) in the CareerSource Central Florida region followed by Lake County (2.9 percent), Osceola County (3.0 percent), and Sumter County (4.6 percent).
  • In November 2018 nonagricultural employment in the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford MSA was 1,332,200, an increase of 60,800 jobs (+4.8 percent) over the year.
  • The Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford MSA had the third fastest annual job growth rate compared to all the metro areas in the state in other services (+4.7 percent) in November 2018.
  • The Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford MSA had the highest annual job growth compared to all the metro areas in the state in leisure and hospitality (+16,200 jobs); mining, logging, and professional and business services (+15,700 jobs); and construction (+11,100 jobs) in November 2018.
  • The Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford MSA had the second fastest annual job growth rate compared to all the metro areas in the state in mining, logging, and construction (+14.7 percent) in November 2018.
  • The Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford MSA had the second fastest annual job growth compared to all the metro areas in the state in education and health services (+7,800); manufacturing (+3,200 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+2,500 jobs); and other services (+2,100 jobs) in November 2018.
  • The Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford MSA had the third highest annual job growth compared to all the metro areas in the state in financial activities (+2,100 jobs) in November 2018.
  • The Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford MSA was tied for the third fastest annual job growth rate compared to all the metro areas in the state in education and health services (+5.1 percent) in November 2018.

  • The mining, logging, and construction (+14.7 percent); professional and business services (+7.0 percent); manufacturing (+6.9 percent); leisure and hospitality (+6.3 percent); education and health services (+5.1 percent); and other services (+4.7 percent) industries grew faster in the metro area than statewide over the year.
  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were: leisure and hospitality (+16,200 jobs); professional and business services (+15,700 jobs); mining, logging, and construction (+11,100 jobs); education and health services (+7,800 jobs); manufacturing (+3,200 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+2,500 jobs); financial activities (+2,100 jobs); other services (+2,100 jobs); and information (+100 jobs).
  • The government industry was unchanged over the year.
  • In November 2018 nonagricultural employment in The Villages MSA was 29,000, an increase of 600 jobs (+2.1 percent) over the year.
