Hurricane Maria Evacuee
More than 140,000 Puerto Ricans have arrived in Central Florida since Hurricane Maria devastated the island last fall. Thanks to the support of the community, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is uniquely positioned to provide hope for these families with disaster relief food boxes, but also to offer an opportunity to transform lives.
In December, with tuition provided by CareerSource Central Florida, Second Harvest launched its first Spanish-language Culinary Training Program class for Puerto Rican evacuees. Over 14 weeks, the class will provide the culinary and life skills training need for a sustainable career in Central Florida’s booming hospitality industry.

Charles W. Calhoun
Human Resources Manager, Rosen Hotels & Resorts
Veteran Charles W. Calhoun found himself seeking a career in the civilian workforce, much like many of our veterans. After serving three years as a reservist on active duty as the Human Resources Non-Commissioned
Officer in Charge (Manager) for a community-based Warrior Transition Unit, Calhoun had to plot his next steps. He reached the maximum allotment of 1,095 consecutive days on active duty and would not be eligible to serve again for a full 365 days. During a hiring event, Calhoun crossed paths with
a Veterans Business Consultant from CareerSource Central Florida, who recommended the Veterans Business Initiative as a resource for potential opportunities. Within only a month of unemployment, Calhoun connected with a hiring manager from Rosen Hotels & Resorts and began working for the highly-esteemed hospitality mogul as the Human Resources Manager. Calhoun now serves one of Central Florida’s leading targeted industries and aims to help other veterans enter this booming market.
“VBI [Veterans Business Initiative] enabled me to connect with other professionals, as well as those who were direct hires for major corporations in the Central Florida area.”
Simulator Technician III, Nova Technologies
Despite providing a valuable service to our country, Donald Manzella faced a familiar struggle among military veterans: convincing businesses that his skills from the military would transfer to a civilian career. While his impressive resume included work as a United States Navy aircraft mechanic, the work began to dry up. Faced with short-lived, unstable contracting jobs, Manzella knew he needed to shift focus. Manzella learned about CareerSource Central Florida through word-of-mouth. He decided to see for himself if it could set him on a career pathway toward longevity and stability. With the assistance of a Veterans Career Consultant, Manzella took advantage of resources, including financial assistance from United Way, the Resource Room, and hiring events. After hard work and utilizing the tailored services, Manzella accepted a position with Nova Technologies as a Simulator Technician III, supporting them with design, development, and sustainment of military training systems, at a starting salary of $43,680.
“I am unbelievably grateful for CareerSource Central Florida and the resources it has. Through my Veterans Career Consultant’s help—I can’t say enough about her—she went beyond the call of duty for me and my wife.”
