Jose Garcia Berdeguer
Obtained the American Hotel and Lodging Front Desk certification
After dropping out of high school at age 18, Jose Garcia thought about his future. He found CareerSource Central Florida’s Career Conextions program for help. Working with one of our Career Consultants, together they developed a customized career plan that included obtaining his high school diploma, gaining an industry certification, and starting a paid internship (where he earned while he learned on the job), which led to a full-time position at that hotel.
When he dropped out of high school at age 18, Jose Garcia’s grandmother encouraged him to think of his future. Jose found CareerSource Central Florida’s Career Conextions program and requested assistance. Being new to the program, Mr. Garcia wasn’t sure how the program could benefit him, but he was quickly indoctrinated into the Career Conextions movement thanks to his engagement with his career consultant.
Working together, they developed a customized career plan that included obtaining his high school diploma, career exploration, industry specific skills and connections to future employment opportunities.
Mr. Garcia was dedicated to the plan and with help from his career consultant, earned his high school diploma. Following this accomplishment, he took several interest and aptitude assessments and decided to pursue a job in hospitality. He began preparing for his American Hotel and Lodging Front Desk certification, and on February 26th obtained his credential. These accomplishments fueled his efforts to obtain his first job. Although thoroughly prepared, Mr. Garcia was still having issues getting his foot in the door because he had no previous work experience.
Seeing his potential, and the attributes he would bring to a business, his Career Consultant suggested a work experience internship as an option. Working together, and using the industry credential he obtained, his career consultant recommended an internship with a local hotel.
Mr. Garcia impressed the hiring manager during his interview and, thanks to the resources CareerSource Central Florida was able to provide, the business was willing to offer him the internship. The dedication he demonstrated during his internship led him to earn a full time, permanent, position with the same business. This is a great example of CareerSource Central Florida providing direct, responsive service to a business’s needs while changing the life of a participant.
While this new job is a great achievement, his Career Conextion experience isn’t complete. To further ensure long-term success, job retention, and economic self-sufficiency, Mr. Garcia is continuing to meet with his Career Services Consultant to explore further educational options that will increase his value to local area businesses and help him further his career path.
