CareerSource Central Florida continues to maintain a staffing presence at the Orlando International Airport (OIA), to welcome those displaced by Hurricane Maria and offer information, assistance, and hope.
CareerSource Central Florida is staffing the OIA location Monday-Friday with 2-3 English/Spanish bilingual team members onsite from 900 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Staff are there to welcome and provide information about our services, hiring events, options, etc., and are referring candidates to our Southeast and Osceola Career Services Centers.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has created a dedicated line to refer Puerto Rican evacuees displaced by Hurricane Maria at 1-800-621-3362. Additionally, Puerto Rican evacuees may apply for assistance at www.disasterassistance.gov.
Puerto Rico has been severely impacted by both Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. Claimants inquiring about filing a claim against Puerto Rico should be advised that due to lack of electricity, the web-site for the Puerto Rico Department of Labor is not operational and no claims are being taken at the present time.
Individuals should continue to monitor the Puerto Rico web site at http://www.trabajo.pr.gov and when it becomes operational, they will be able to file a claim through the internet. Filing a claim though the internet will be faster than other methods so it is advisable to wait to file online.
Potential claimants can also call 1-800-621-FEMA.
Governor Rick Scott directed Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) Secretary Jonathan Zachem to issue an Emergency Order suspending all fees required for occupational license applications for residents of Puerto Rico who were impacted by Hurricane Maria and are now in Florida. This includes over 50 different individual professional license types, such as barbers and realtors. By suspending fees, residents from Puerto Rico will be able to obtain a license from the state more quickly and continue their careers in Florida.
