Central Florida’s Unemployment Rate At 5.8% for January 2021, 1.0 Percentage Point Higher than the State


Orlando, Fla.,– The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Central Florida (CSCF) region (Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Sumter counties) was 5.8% in January 2021, which was higher than the state’s rate of 4.8%. This rate was 2.3 percentage point higher than the region’s rate of 3.5% during the same timeframe last year. The labor force was 1,278,013, down 127,660 (-9.1) over the year. There were 73,937 unemployed residents in the region.

Unemployment Rates

Central Florida’s Lowest Unemployment Rates:

  • Seminole County had the lowest unemployment rate (4.8%) in the CSCF region followed by Lake County (5.4%), Orange County (5.9%), Sumter County (6.0%), and Osceola County (7.0%).

Job Growth Trends

Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford MSA:

  • Nonagricultural employment was 1,162,200, a decrease of 172,400 Jobs
    (-12.9%) over the year.
  • Industries losing jobs over the year were:
    • Leisure and Hospitality (-105,400 Jobs)
    • Professional Businesses and Services (-22,500 Jobs)
    • Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (-16,500 Jobs)
    • Education and Health Services (-9,200 Jobs)
    • Financial Activities (-4,200 Jobs)
    • Government (-3,000 Jobs)
    • Manufacturing (-2,700 Jobs)
    • Mining, Logging, and Construction (-1,600)
    • Information (-1,200 Jobs)

The Villages MSA:

  • Nonagricultural employment was 31,400, a decrease of 1,500 Jobs (-4.6%) over the year.
