Mature workers are redefining career transitions
Considering a career change later in life is more common than ever. Many professionals spend decades in one field before contemplating their next steps, whether due to financial shifts, evolving personal goals, or a desire for new challenges. As the job market continues to evolve, more individuals are exploring opportunities to transition into new roles, bringing valuable experience and fresh perspectives to their next chapter.
Across Central Florida, more and more workers aged 50+ are stepping back into the workforce, bringing years of expertise, professionalism, and a strong work ethic. Some are seeking new jobs out of necessity, driven by rising healthcare costs, inflation, and uncertainty around retirement benefits. Others are driven by purpose, a desire to stay connected, engaged, or to continue making a difference.
CareerSource Central Florida (CSCF) is supporting encore workers 50+ who are re-entering the workforce. Through the Access to Career Pathways Program, CSCF provides the tools, training and resources to re-enter the workforce or change careers to remain competitive. Whether through job search assistance, training opportunities, or resume-building workshops, CSCF ensures that participants can confidently step into their next chapter.

Trends in Mature Worker Employment
The labor force participation rate for individuals aged 50 and over has increased 12% since 2021 and is projected to increase another 5% in Central Florida by 2027, reflecting both demographic shifts and evolving workforce trends. Some trends suggest that mature workers are especially essential in industries such as healthcare, education, and customer service. Administrative roles, or those that require less strenuous physical work and more flexibility like part-time or bridge-jobs to transition into retirement, are also in high demand for mature workers.
With the right support and resources, mature workers can successfully navigate career transitions, contributing their expertise and leadership to a changing workforce. As organizations recognize the value of this experienced talent pool, programs like CareerSource Central Florida’s Access to Career Pathways ensure that encore workers remain competitive, engaged, and empowered to thrive in the next phase of their careers.
